Michelle Deignan's work for Bus-Tops, ‘Revolution’ is an episodic text piece written in the style of a film script. Each day the new episodes will animate, as if type written live, across ten selected bus-tops across the city. These episodes will be self-contained, describing often prosaic and occasionally dramatic fictional events. The text will be rendered in courier, a font synonymous with film and television scripts. The complete script, with written camera directions, music cues, character descriptions and dialogue, describes an art critic's experiences as he takes multiple journeys across London to see a public artwork. ‘Revolution’ considers the bus as both a film set and a camera. Top deck views give the passenger the ultimate vantage point for an imagined narrative, connecting the unfolding mini dramas in and outside the bus. Simultaneously, images of the ebb and flow of passengers are continuously captured via security cameras, potential material for later inclusion in another constructed narrative. Michelle Deignan views the script's episodes as potential insertions or digressions to the many stories that are evolving daily on the buses. Michelle Deignan was born in Ireland and graduated from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin with a BFA in Sculpture. She has since completed postgraduate studies at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Dundee, Scotland, and Goldsmiths College, London. Deignan's work is concerned with the construction of representation. She reveals the illusion behind the images and narratives she constructs, often setting them askew or placing their authority under scrutiny. Her moving image works often combine documentary and fictional narratives, blending personal anecdotes, political and cultural histories with prosaic observations. Deignan's work is represented by Maria Stenfors, London. Her first solo show at the gallery 'Posing as a subject amongst subjects' took place in September/October 2011. She has exhibited her work in over 50 national and international exhibitions and festivals including: 'New Work UK - Trust Yourself', Whitechapel Gallery, London; 'Europart - New Contemporary Art from Europe', Vienna; 'transmediale.08', House of Cultures, Berlin; 'Film Programme 1', Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe. Michelle is also founder of 'Moody' a nomadic curatorial project. Recent projects include 'Past, Partial, Present' a gallery discussion with Gavin Wade, Uriel Orlow and Dr. Emily Mark Fitzgerald and 'Side Story' a screening of artists' films with works by Annie Davey, Gerard Byrne, Alexandra Navratil, Paul Rooney, Michael Maziere.
