It’s out there! (testing on location)

Things are coming together. On the 9th and 10th of December, we tested an MDF prototype on top of a bus-shelter in Brockley. We rocked up to our test-site armed with a slightly rough testing plan, hard hats and high viz jackets.
It was the first time all elements (substructure, screen, enclosure, bus-shelter) came together, which was nice. Not everything was made from the final material yet: mdf instead of aluminium for the substructure and instead of London plane hardwood for the enclosure. Nevertheless, it gave us a very good indication of what the final installation will look and feel like…
As always when testing something, they’re were a few things that didn’t quite work out as planned. The PC (polycarbonate, a plastic) cover we tested turned out to be too shiny and reflective. But apart from this and a few other hiccups, the testing made us very happy. The red led’s framed in the wooden enclosure just look fantastically quirky on top of the bus shelter.
We’re now finishing some calculations on the structural elements as well as finalising all technical drawings to manufacture our first prototype for long-term testing. The times are exciting.

and here’s a video showing the approach from the top deck of a bus:
